Language of Stone News #1

Greetings! We are excited at this, the launch of our new website, and we give many thanks to our friend, drummer, and web masterbuilder (get the Gong reference?), Ben McConnell, for making it a reality. Ben is a superb human and an equally superb drummer. He now has a fully functioning drum studio from where he can remotely record for YOUR project. Hit him up at crosslegged@gmail.com.

Speaking of drums, Ben plays all over our latest release, Woodwose’s eponymous debut. The team of Gillian Chadwick (Ex Reverie) and Jessica Weeks (Magus) gathered in the mid 00’s to write and record a gorgeous and mysterious slice of genre-defying psychedelia that, for various reasons both known and forgotten, sat idly on two reels of 2” tape until being resurrected, packaged, and released as the fourteenth Language of Stone missive. The ladies are back in the studio recording a follow-up to said release, so keep your eyes peeled for more news on that!

Interestingly, but not coincidentally, Woodwose will contribute a track to the upcoming Language of Stone compilation album, Standing Stones Round the Sun, a two LP charitable release whose line-up will both astound and deliver an astounding amount of talent into your lap (or your turntable’s lap…or whatever). We are busy compiling tracks as they arrive and will happily inform you of the project’s status over the coming months.

Also waiting in the wings…

…Black Orchid Sect. This debut release from Greg Weeks and Alison O’Donnel is sure to please fans of psychedelic folk and folk rock in general. Fans of the label know Greg’s work well and most likely are passionate devotees of one of Alison’s earliest bands, Mellow Candle (literally the best folk rock record of all time in our humble opinion (sorry Fairport)). The album, Beneath the Rocks, features Jesse Sparhawk on bass, Jessica Weeks on various keys, with drums split evenly between Ben McConnell (natch), and Charlie Hall of War on Drugs! Cover art, currently under works, will be supplied by the immensely talented Maria Pugnetti (www.woolymar.com), whose work you may know from Language of Stone favorite Mariee Sioux’s album cover for Faces in the Rocks.

…Wyrd Way. Long percolating, Wyrd Way is a multi-media project from Greg Weeks with a host of guest singers who fill the roles as written in the accompanying novella of the same name. A folk-horror project extraordinaire, the album will feature in no particular order Lavinia Blackwall (Trembling Bells), Marissa Nadler, Jason Merritt (Timesbold), and Jess and Gillian from Woodwose. How do guest singers fit into a folk-horror novella, you ask? Well, the tale follows a psychedelic folk band on tour in Europe. As is the case, they meet and play shows with other artists. Each time a song is performed in the novella, that same song is available for play on the accompanying LP. Better yet, the extensive album art will be supplied by the limitlessly talented Emiliano Maggi (emi_maggi on Instagram), whose art graced the cover of Greg’s album The Hive (look for a re-issue of that album in the not-so-distant future).
